The film follows the lives of two families over the course of several years the Northern Stonemans, who are pro-union, and the Southern Camerons, who are pro-confederacy.Īlthough the film was deemed to be groundbreaking due to its use of innovative cinematic techniques, it was also widely criticised for its content, which was extremely racist, as well as factually inaccurate, despite portraying the information in a documentary style which insinuated that it was true. Originally the film was presented in two separate parts, with an intermission in between. The film entitled ‘Birth of a Nation’ was a 1915 silent production which was directed by D.W Griffith and was based on a novel by Thomas Dixon called The Clansman.
